Black & White Inspiration Board on Pinterest

Pinterest has taken my collection of black & white inspirational photos and ideas to another level.  No only can I browse, but I can now "pin" anything I see as I surf the web.   It's nice that Pinterest  not only organizes my pics, but also connects the photo with a link back to the website where I found it.

I'm including a few of the great photos I've been inspired by, as well as, the link for my board here: My Black & White Inspirational Board at Pinterest

I'm going to attempt to begin updating the blog on a regular basis with new B&W photography, decor ideas and other B&W inspiration.  Please check back soon.

Contrast in Black and White

From the beginning of time... the beauty of creation and our world has been explained in contrasts...

"God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night...And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven...And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.  And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good...And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good...So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."(Gen. 1)

Maybe that is where my inherent attraction to black & white comes from...  Sometimes I think we have been conditioned to think a certain way about the obvious contrast.  Black and White are widely used to depict opposites.  Visually, black and white show the highest possible contrast.  Even in our culture, black and white have often symbolized "good and evil" and then further related to light and darkness.  The Black Cowboy hat of the villain vs. the White Cowboy hat of the hero.  (Even icomputer security, a black hat is an attacker with evil intentions, while a white hat bears no such ill will.)

"Black and white thinking" is the false dichotomy of assuming anything not good is evil and vice versa.  If you think facts or situations are black and white, you have a simple and very certain opinion about them, often when other people think they are really more complicated.  Or black and white could symbolize a very clear choice that causes no confusion.

The best way to see the effect of contrast is by examining a black and white photo. In fact, black and white images are pretty blah without a good amount of contrast (think of it as the widest variety of discernable shades of gray – ranging from black to white).  It’s the contrast between the subject and the background that makes the subject stand out.  When viewing an image the eye is always drawn toward the contrasting elements.

Black and White is everywhere.  There is the symbol and philosophy of the Yin and yang.  The Dark Ages vs. the Age of Enlightenment and so on.

But going back to the beginning, I think that God enjoys contrast.  He loves how one compliments the other.  The distinction, in of itself, is beautiful.  A measure to display God's handiwork.  Contrast is to set in opposition in order to show or emphasize differences.  Just as babies eyes are drawn to the distinct contrast of black and white, so am I also drawn.  Everything from pictures and art to decor and clothing. That creative element that God put in each of us gets inspired.  Black and white and all the shades in-between...

Happy New Year 100 Years in Black & White....

I found this old photo on the internet as I was googling New Year's Day 2011.  The people in the photo would not even recognize the world we live in today.  It is amazing the things that have happened in the last 100 years... the advancements... the inventions... the technology....

Time brings the bad as well as the good... World War 1 and World War 2... Korean War...Vietnam War... The Gulf War... 9-11... and so on...

Generations have passed and the new would not recognize the old...

The old would not recognize the new...

Time...

May the Lord Bless us and keep...

May His Light shine upon us...

May the lonely find love...

May the down find joy...

May the troubled find peace...

May the empty find hope...

Happy New Year 2011!
